Marian, Country Day Basketball Teams Advance to Girl's Quarterfinals

The Mustangs take on another top-10 opponent Tuesday while the Yellowjackets draw Flint Powers, which hasn't lost since Feb. 1.

The playoffs continue Tuesday night for the Marian High School Mustangs, who reached the MHSAA quarterfinals in dramatic fashion with a 40-37 overtime victory over Clarkston Friday.

The Mustangs' stingy defense kept them in the game with top-10 ranked Clarkston, and sealed the victory by keeping the Wolves off the scoreboard in the extra session. Kara Holinski, who scored a team high 13 points, nailed a three for the only basket in overtime to give Marian the victory, said Bob Hanon, a member of Marians's Athletic Board.

The win secured the school's 12th regional title and first appearance in the quarterfinals since 2004, Miprepzone.com reported.

It is the third Class B quarterfinals appearance in as many years for the Yellowjackets, who beat Ferndale handily in the regional finals Thursday, 59-37.

"It was a team effort, just like every other day," Country Day junior Asia Doss told MLive. "It doesn't matter who we play, we just have to play as a team."
