Marian, Country Day Girls Fall in MHSAA Playoffs

Grosse Pointe South proves to be too much for Marian Mustangs, and the Yellowjackets fall to Flint Powers in quarterfinal action.

The playoffs came to an end Tuesday night for the Marian High School Mustangs and Detroit Country Day Yellowjacktes in the MHSAA girl's quarterfinals.

Marian, which reached this round in dramatic fashion with a 40-37 overtime victory over Clarkston Friday, fell to Grosse Pointe South 63-58 in a Class A matchup at Lake Shore High School. Grosse Pointe (24-1) now moves on to the Breslin Center in East Lansing, where they'll take on Dexter on Friday at 2:50 p.m.

Marian trailed by seven points at halftime and stormed back from a 15-point deficit to take the lead late, however they couldn't hang on, said Bob Hanon, a member of Marian's Athletic Board. Senior Kamry Peake and Freshman Bailey Thomas led the Mustangs with 15 points apiece, and Brittany Gray added 10, according to Miprepzone.com.

The Catholic High School League champions finished the season 22-4, won the school's 12th regional title and made the team's first appearance in the quarterfinals since 2004.

"Since there are only two starters leaving next year we can make another run at a championship," Hanon said, looking ahead to next season.

Yellowjackets Overpowered

The Detroit Country Day girl's varsity team made it to the quarterfinals for the third-consecutive year but could not overcome a slow start to Flint Powers Catholic (20-6) and lost 50-30 at Yale High School. The Yellowjackets (18-4) trailed 15-5 after the first quarter and were down eight points at halftime, according to Miprepzone.com.

Asia Doss scored 10 points and Brittany Washington finished with 9 in the loss. The girls' regional title is the school's 16th straight in Class B.
