The Week Ahead: Big Test For Lahser Football

The Knights showdown with Seaholm on Friday is the game of the week.

There’s no love between the Lahser and Seaholm football programs.

“Seaholm is a real big matchup for us,” Knights head coach Dan Loria said. “It’s a real key game, that’s our other rival besides Andover.”

Friday's 7 p.m. contest on the Maples home field, will have added importance this year with both teams going into the game 2-0 in the Oakland Activities Association Blue division.

For the Knights, their secondary will face its first true challenge. They gave up 35 points to Seaholm in a loss last season. This year the Maples offense is even better. Senior quarterback John Glazier has been tremendous through the early part of the year, spreading the ball around to his athletic receivers Chris Barr and J.D. Hess.

Lahser’s advantage will be its size. Seaholm has scored 104 points in two weeks, but Glazier has been able to just sit back in the pocket. The Knights defensive line could be a difference maker in week three.

Things won’t get easier for the other Bloomfield Hills team this week. Andover is 0-2 and hosts Avondale at 7 p.m. Friday, the most dangerous offense in the OAA Blue.

The Yellow Jackets (2-0; 1-0 OAA Blue) scored 55 points in week one and came back with 64 in week two. Last season, they put 55 on the Barons.

“We got our work cut for us,” Andover coach Jim DeWald said.

In other action, Brother Rice (2-0) will head down to the University of Toledo to play Saint Francis DeSales at 7 p.m. Friday. The Warriors will be looking to avenge a 17-14 loss last year and stay undefeated.

Detroit Country Day has a critical game on Thursday this week when it hosts Harper Woods at 7:30 p.m. The Yellowjackets have lost their first two games and a third straight loss would put nearly put the playoffs out of reach.

Andover and Lahser Varsity Cross Country

Runners from both schools will compete on Saturday (Time – TBA) at the West Bloomfield and Brother Rice Invitational at Kensington Metro Park. Andover and Lahser have strong boys and girls teams this year including a handful of athletes that qualified for state last year.

Seniors Lise Devits and Lexi Sinclair each finished in the top 35 last season. They should be runners to watch this weekend along with sophomore Mackenzie Gammons. On the boys side, senior Jarred Bratley and junior Joey Kemeny are the key runners.

For Lahser, junior Mara Gueli and senior Isabel Fontana along with junior Michael Gawlik will look to help the Knights compete at the tournament.

Marian and Cranbrook Kingswood Varsity Golf

Both schools finished in the top-10 at the state finals last season, Marian finished fifth place in Division 2 and Cranbrook finished in ninth place in Division 3, will play at the Stonycroft Hills Golf Club on Tuesday (3 p.m.).

The Mustangs have three seniors back from last year Macy Hudson, Kelly Lunghamer and Ellen Manson while Cranbrook Kingswood has sophomore Greer Clausen leading the way this season.

Marian is already 2-0 in the Catholic League this season with wins over Regina (194-192) and Notre Dame Prep (195-184). It will look to stay undefeated on Tuesday.
