Young Readers Dig Into Summer Book Program

The program for Bloomfield Township youths culminates with a summer book bash Monday night.

More than 800 children battled the 'summer slide' by participating in the annual summer reading program offered at the Bloomfield Township Library

During the past eight weeks, children and entire Bloomfield Township families set their own reading goals — big or small — and explored stories about digging or people, animals and places beneath the Earth as part of the 'Dig into Reading; theme. They kept track with a worksheet earmarked with incentives. For each goal reached, children earned trips to the treasure chest for games, toys and other fun items, said Marian Rafal of the library's Youth Services Department.

The program officially ended last Friday, but the celebration culminates tonight at 6 p.m. with a Summer Reading Book Bash. Children that achieved their goals will received a free book of their choice, and other prize winners for the summer will be announced by the Youth Services staff.
