The Salvation Army’s Echo Grove Camp Receives a Facelift

Longtime supporters of The Salvation Army, Betty Foster and her late husband, Robert have ensured that children in need receive opportunities that many would never have otherwise through a significant donation towards Echo Grove Camp and Retreat Center in Leonard, Mich. The Bloomfield Hills’ couple’s generous contribution has been used for renovations to transform an old pole barn into an art studio on the 188 acre campsite.

Dedication of the newly renovated art building, along with a housing facility and two new pavilions took place at the nonprofit’s recent annual barbecue hosted at the camp by The Salvation Army Metro Detroit Advisory Board.

Creator’s Place, once an old, dark storage barn, is now a brightly reimagined space where children can express their creativity. The new art studio is filled with new art tables and equipment along with paint, pottery and craft materials to guide the children in art education.

“The Fosters’ passion for art education led to this wonderful enhancement of the art program at Echo Grove Camp. Their legacy will continue on each and every day at Creator’s Place,” said Major Mark Anderson, general secretary and metro Detroit area commander of The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit.

Robert Foster passed away in January 2013 before he could see the vision of his contribution.

The Metro Detroit Women’s Auxiliary contributed $80,000 towards two pavilions built on the grounds of Echo Grove Camp and Retreat Center, aptly named Evangeline and Catherine. Evangeline Booth was The Salvation Army’s first woman general and Catherine Booth was the wife of William Booth and known as the mother of The Salvation Army.

Ste. Clair, a housing facility for staff, volunteers, special guests and visitors, has also been renovated on the campsite. The building is large enough to accommodate up to six people with two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a lounge featuring a beautiful fireplace.

Since 1921, The Salvation Army’s Echo Grove Camp and Retreat Center has been providing outdoor programming to thousands of children each year. With a picturesque background, the camp allows children to build new skills and experience a variety of activities to strengthen their mind, body and soul.
