No real surprises for Bloomfield-area voters as the filing deadline passes. Let the campaigning begin!
The Aug. 7 primary picture is much clearer following Tuesday's filing deadline for candidates wishing to appear on the ballot. There were no real surprises for Bloomfield-area residents. All seven members of the Bloomfield Township Board of Trustees, including all three full-time elected officials, will run unopposed. Barring major turnout for a write-in candidate, Tuesday's deadline all but secured a shot in November at four-year terms for Supervisor Leo Savoie and Trustee Corinne Khederian, who were appointed to their positions late last year. Candidates for school board positions will file to appear on the general election ballot later this year. Judicial candidates had to meet a May 1 filing deadline. Candidates may also pursue …

Detroit Lions standouts lead a special training experience to celebrate the grand opening of their new business venture in Bloomfield Township.
Roughly 300 fitness enthusiasts got a first-hand experience of what it's like to train with the pros Tuesday as Detroit Lions Ndamukong Suh and Tony Scheffler kicked-off the opening of D1 Detroit. The football stars are part of local ownership group that has taken over a portion of the Bloomfield Tennis and Fitness Club on Bloomfield Township's north side and offers a new type of fitness experience to the area. "It's an opportunity for me to show the kids what I went through, the things I went through when I was younger," Suh told wxyz.com. "I started out in sports. I was fortunate enough to have a similar situation, not as advanced as D1 was, but it helped me get better." While a committed sales and marketing team has been promoting the…

We know you take hundreds of photos, so send us a pic or two of pre-prom and prom festivities so we can feature them on Patch.
Did you like the photo galleries we posted of both the Andover High School and Lahser High School homecoming dances last fall? We'd like to do it again for the school's respective proms this weekend. But we need your help. Andover's prom is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Townsend Hotel. Lahser's prom also begins at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Knollwood Country Club. Since we can't be at both, and wouldn't want to favor coverage for one at the expense to the other, we'd love to have parents and teens help make a photo gallery they'd be proud to share with rest of the community. So much of prom is about who you’re with and the memories you make . . . and, of course what you're wearing. Let's see those photos! We know parents and students …

If it were up to you, what would you like to see move into this spot in Bloomfield Township?
In April, we told you about the abrupt closure of the Bloomfield Township Big Boy Restaurant after more than 30 years of operation. William Van Horn, the representative for the Van Horn Real Estate, which owns the property, said the restaurant closed when the longtime operator decided to retire. Further details were not immediately available. Van Horn said he's received at least 150 telephone calls about the property, including many from upset customers that want their favorite breakfast spot to return. "I try to be nice to them and hope they understand," the former Bloomfield Township resident said by telephone Monday. "I know it was very popular, and for a few decades in 1980s and 1990s Big Boy was where a lot of business deals were …

Students and staff at the Roeper Middle and Upper School campus remember Annemarie Roeper at morning tribute.
The legacy of the late Roeper School co-founder Annemarie Roeper weighed heavily on everyone’s minds at the school’s middle and upper school campus Tuesday morning. “We are the safeguards of (Roeper’s) philosophy,” senior Gavin Buckley said. “We’re here now to make the world a better place.” Middle and upper school teachers, administrators and students gathered at the Birmingham campus Tuesday morning to honor Roeper, who passed away Friday in California at the age of 93. Even more importantly, Tuesday was a time for the Roeper community to remember and reaffirm Roeper’s educational philosophy and how it continues to shape the lives of Roeper students. Durning the 45 minute tribute to Roeper, students, staff and Roeper’s friends stood up …

Monthly figures for Oakland County show residential real estate market still rebounds.
Refreshing news for local home-sellers is in the latest look at sale prices for homes and condos in four Metro Detroit counties. Median prices rose to $70,000 in Oakland, Macomb, Livingston and Wayne last month, a 1.6-percent rise from March. The new median is nearly 19 percent higher than in April 2011, says a report Monday from Realcomp II Ltd., a multiple listing service in Farmington Hills. Selling prices rose within each county, extending a four-month trend for 2012. Livingston County has the highest median ($150,000), followed by Oakland ($114,500), Macomb ($72,500) and "Greater Wayne," excluding Detroit ($62,000). Percentage increases from the previous April are in a table below. Sales volume slipped for the first time in 10 …
Thirty stations from 14 states will be represented at event Wednesday.
The Biff, 88.1 FM, will host the first ever nationwide celebration of high school radio stations on Wednesday. The brainchild of WBFH's award-winning station manager Pete Bowers, the event is modeled after National College Radio Day in October, and consists of 30 stations from 14 states around the country. At least five of the stations are Internet-only. The goal is to help connect and promote high school radio stations at a time when public awareness is low, and funding pressures due to public school budget cuts continue to increase. Bowers said that only one percet of Michigan high schools have a radio station and he estimates that there are only about 200 high schools in the nation with either a terrestrial over-the-air non-commercial, …
