Nearly two-dozen members of the Lower School's second grade took the stage with the real estate-mogul and television star Donald Trump at the 2013 Oakland County GOP Lincoln Dinner.
Students in Christina M. Del Pizzo's second grade class at Detroit Country Day School in Bloomfield Township shared the stage with Donald Trump during the 2013 Oakland County GOP Lincoln Dinner Tuesday in Novi and were recognized for their writing about leadership. The crowd of roughly 2,300 — who each received a copy of the book of essays the students wrote — cheered as the students were introduced with the developer of major skyscrapers and star of the 'Apprentice' television show. WXYZ-TV's 34-year tradition of honoring Metro Detroit's top high school students continues with several from Bloomfield schools.
Channel 7, WXYZ recently honored more than 250 recipients of this year's "Brightest and Best" award with a special luncheon at the station in Southfield. Among the winners for 2013, the 34rd year of program, were ten from Bloomfield-area schools. Vote now through May 17 for the Eastover Elementary School's C.H.E.W. Program.
The Eastover Elementary School community is asking residents to vote to help win a grant for the school's C.H.E.W. Program. The C.H.E.W. - Cook-Harvest-Eat-Well - initiative combines unique learning opportunities from the Eastover student garden, classroom hydroponic growing systems and the Eastover mobile kitchen, according to the school's web site. Students use these tools to learn about the health and environmental benefits of eating locally grown fresh produce. The Eastover garden is currently in the running for a $25,000 grant or one of 15 $10,000 grants from Seeds of Change. The school plans to use the grant funds to help sustain student gardening year-round and expand space for planting. People can vote every day through May 17. …

Two educators in the Bloomfield Hills Schools are among 58 nominees from nearly two dozen school districts who will be recognized Thursday at the Oakland Schools campus in Waterford.
Oakland County schools will honor two teachers from the Bloomfield Hills Schools Thursday during the 26th annual Outstanding Teacher of the Year Awards in Waterford. West Maple staff, students and family pulling together to soften blow of Harry Berkowitz's death.
The staff at West Maple Elementary School in Bloomfield Township had a difficult day as students returned Wednesday following the devastating news of beloved teacher Harry Berkowitz's death. Yet the building's and district's staff, the students and school family are helping each other through it, Birmingham Public Schools spokeswoman Marcia Wilkinson said. "(They) have pulled together to support one another during this very sad time," she said late Wednesday afternoon. The district had grief counselors and additional support staff at the building and will continue to do so this week. The Farminghton Hills teen wins a close competition and a chance at stardom.
Detroit Country Day student Madelyn Karoub, 17, recently won a close competition that could help launch her modeling career. Karoub was the winner in Model Launcher's Green-themed contest for girls 17 through 20. Contestants were asked to submit nonprofessional photos in a favorite green outfit to participate, and public voting determined the winner. “Madelyn’s win for the Green contest was very intense,” Model Launcher CEO and founder Bill Staniford said in a news release. “Madelyn is a very sweet girl. She’s dazzling, ambitious, and knows what she wants. I know she will have countless opportunities in the future."
