Mike McCready Wins GOP Primary for 40th District in State House

The Bloomfield Hills City Commissioner rose above a crowded field to win with 32 percent of the vote in the Aug. 7 primary. Democrat Dorian Coston awaits in November.

There were several anxious moments while waiting for results to trickle in, but Mike McCready kept cool-headed and focused on being the next Republican to represent voters in the 40th District in Lansing. Much like he had for the better part of three months. McCready was rewarded early this morning when unofficial results from the Oakland County Clerk's Office showed he won the district bridging Bloomfield, West Bloomfield and Birmingham with 32 percent of the vote over three formidable opponents. County Commissioner and Birmingham-based attorney David Potts and West Bloomfield attorney David Wolkinson finished in a virtual tie for second with 29.8 percent, and Birmingham Board of Education Trustee Robert Lawrence rounded out the field …

A major congratulations to Mike, he is going to make an outstanding representative - our community is lucky to have had such a distinguished group of candidates vying for office. One clarification to the above commenter, the Wolkinson campaign never represented that Snyder endorsed. The quote that was used was approved by Governor Snyder and represented exactly what it said. Never once did the …   more ›

Bloomfield Township Public Safety Millage Passes Overwhelmingly

Voters authorize renewal of 10-year millage that covers roughly one-third of public safety costs.

More than 81 percent of Bloomfield Township voters approved a 2.39-mill tax renewal Tuesday that will maintain the current level of public safety services. Unofficial election results from the Bloomfield Township Clerk's Office show the measure passed in all precincts Tuesday. At stake was the potential to lose roughly one-third of the budget allocated to police and fire-related services to township residents and businesses. A scenario that certainly would have meant layoffs in both the police and fire departments, said Township Supervisor Leo Savoie.  "It's really good to see," said Savoie while greeting poll workers at Bloomfield Township Hall Tuesday Night. "It's good to see the community stand behind the departments and it's a strong …

More than 62% of Township voters DID NOT SHOW UP AT THE POLLS ! Bloomfield Township has 34,449 registered voters. Only 13,090 of them showed up at the ballot box yesterday. Only 11,980 of those voters actually voted on the public safety millage. Apparently 1110 voters forgot to look on the back of the ballot for other issues, including the public safety proposal or they simply chose not to vote …   more ›

On The Aug. 7 Ballot: Who's Running for Judge?

Patch is giving voters a look at who's running in the Aug. 7 primary, happening Tuesday.

Bloomfield's August primary happens tomorrow, and there's a lot of issues and candidates on the ballot. Open seats in the Oakland County Circuit Court don't occur very often, and multiple Bloomfield-area attorneys are competing for one to be decided by fall. Dan Christ and Layne Ashley Sakwa are among the candidate field to fill the seat vacated by Circuit Judge Edward Sosnick's retirement. Also in the mix are Birmingham attorney Karen McDonald and Novi's Sahera Housey and Walled Lake's Jason Pernick. Voters will select one of five candidates for circuit court judge in the 6th circuit. The winner will serve a six-year term. Judges fall under the non-partisan section of the ballot, meaning anyone — no matter the political party — can vote …

Your Aug. 7 Primary Ballot

Candidate fields for local, state and federal races will be whittled down, and millage requests for public safety, buses and the arts will be determined Tuesday.

Planning to vote tomorrow? Remember, the Aug. 7 primary is partially closed, meaning voters can only choose candidates in either the Republican or Democrat section of the partisan ballot. Check here for more information about voting in Aug. 7 primary. Here's a look at the candidates and issues that you will see on your ballot:   Incumbent U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow is running unopposed in the Democratic primary for one of two Senate seats. Her opponents in the Republican primary are: Clark Durant, Randy Hekman and Pete Hoekstra. Though Republican Gary Glenn's name appears on the ballot, he dropped out of the race weeks ago. District 9: Due to redistricting, 9th District U.S. Rep. Gary Peters (D-Bloomfield Twp.) is now running in the …

"Mike McCready is the best choice for State Representative" is common feedback I’m getting when talking and visiting voters. I'm told that my background as a business man and the fact that I have not missed one vote in 5 years of elected office are some of the key reasons residents of Michigan's 40th District are voting for Mike McCready.   more ›

11th District Candidate: The Rev. Drexel Morton

The pastor from Canton seeks Thaddeus McCotter's congressional seat as a write-in candidate.

With no formal political background, a Canton man who serves as a pastor in Hartland is hoping to get to Washington, D.C. by capitalizing on the open candidate field in the race to fill former 11th District Rep. Rep. Thaddeus McCotter's seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. The Rev. Drexel Morton, pastor of Hartland's All Saints Lutheran Church, entered the race as a Republican write-in candidate last month, following McCotter's resignation. The incumbent's decision came amid a scandal sparked when he failed to receive enough valid signatures to appear on the ballot. Morton said he considered running for months due to his belief that the country is "divided like never before," and needs people who are willing to work across party …

Letter to the Editor

OPINION: Support the DIA Millage on Aug. 7

For $10 or $15 dollars it's a worthy investment, given all of the cultural and educational enrichment the DIA provides.

I am writing to encourage my neighbors in Bloomfield Hills and Oakland County to support the Detroit Institute of Arts by voting YES on August 7 for our county’s art institute authority. The DIA is one of the top art museums in the world and we are fortunate to have it in our region. Many of my neighbors might not be aware of how frequently Oakland County residents visit the DIA or how often the DIA visits us. In the last couple of years, more than 12,000 Oakland County students have been to the DIA and 3,000 Oakland County residents from community organizations toured the recent blockbuster exhibition, Rembrandt and the Face of Jesus. The DIA is also in our county, daily. The museum has provided more than 200 talks and classes to our …

In its DIA, Detroit has millions in cash but billions -- many, many billions! -- in artworks. Those millions in cash, even adding a DIA millage's $230 million, can't save the DIA from a Detroit bankruptcy -- Detroit's DIA art collection will be the first City asset auctioned off! Those billions in artworks, though, can keep Detroit out of bankruptcy. Detroit can raise billions to secure its …   more ›
