The Bloomfield Hills Department of Public Safety director will step down next month after helping to train his successor.
Chief Rick Matott's last day leading the Bloomfield Hills Department of Public Safety will be April 30. Members of the Bloomfield Hills City Commission confirmed the date at their meeting Tuesday, and will immediately begin working on the process for a replacement. Matott, 59, submitted his resignation last Friday and targeted May 31 as his final day with the department after 33 years. City Manager Jay Cravens said April 30 would be sufficient time to find and transition a successor. The search for new director will include opportunities for experienced candidates both within and outside the department, Matott said. The qualifications and desired skills are still being developed. "Chief Matott is an outstanding person is so many ways," …

The Bloomfield Hills City Commission is expected to discuss the process to replace the long-time officer and chief tonight.
Chief Rick Matott of the Bloomfield Hills Department of Public Safety will step down effective May 31, ending a 33-year career with the city. In a letter submitted to City Manager Jay Cravens on Friday, Matott indicated the announcement met his obligation to provide the city 30-days notice, and noted that it gives city officials ample time to help with the search and training of his successor. Matott declined comment Tuesday. Though it is not on the approved agenda, the City Commission is expected to review and discuss his letter of resignation and end date at their regularly scheduled meeting tonight at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall. "We would like to thank Chief Matott for his service to this community," Mayor Sarah McClure told Downtown …

Officers with the Bloomfield Hills Department of Public Safety arrested a homeless man who tried to cash a bogus check at a bank in the city on Wednesday, reports said. Police responded to the bank in the 39000 block of Woodward Avenue at about 11:40 a.m., after employees prevented the man from cashing a check that appeared suspicious. Chief Rick Matott said an internal security bulletin issued through the bank that day alerted employees to fraudulent checks passed at other branches. The bad checks were linked to the same account. Matott said officers arrested the 30-year-old man without incident, and that he told investigators two unknown women picked him up in Detroit and promised him $50 to cash the check. He was taken to the Oakland …
