The Bloomfield Township Fire Department is among emergency first responders across the country reminding people of an important precautionary measure.
You've change your clocks (hopefully!) for Dayligt Saving Time, but the Bloomfield Township Fire Department wants to also remind residents of the importance of changing the batteries on home smoke detectors. Both today and the end of Daylight Saving Time (November) are opportune times to check and change batteries in smoke and other detectors in your home, the department mentioned on its Facebook Page. "Make sure that your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors have fresh batteries and are up to date," the message stated. "If your detectors are not interconnected consider replacing them. It’s a small price to pay for the extra time it will provide." A report issued by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) in September of 2011 …

Lyal Bigger started his stint as a part-time assistant fire chief and fire marshal in Birmingham shortly after retiring from Bloomfield Township.
Yesterday, we dipped into the Bloomfield Patch Neighborhood Pics & Clips Archive to show the special retirement ceremony honoring former Bloomfield Township Assistant Fire Chief Lyal Bigger. He didn't stay off duty for very long. Bigger was named Birmingham's new part-time assistant fire chief and fire marshal shortly after his retirement in from the township in the fall, which ended his 28-year career with the organization. Now he's at Birmingham's Adams Street Fire Station to help investigations and residents with their fire-prevention questions. The city's fire marshal position was vacant for more than a year and a half following the retirement of Charlie Monti in early 2011 after 33 years. Fire Chief Mike Metz said the city decided in …

No one was injured in the fire on Kennesaw, in the city's Poppleton Park neighborhood, on Christmas Day.
Bloomfield Township firefighters were among the first on the scene of a house fire in Birmingham on Christmas Day. The blaze at 685 Kennesaw began shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday in the garage and later engulfed the rear of the two-story colonial home in flames. said Birmingham Fire Department Capt. Bill Wallace. "Unfortunately, (the fire) was well involved by the time we got there," Wallace said, noting firefighters from Birmingham and Bloomfield Township arrived a little less than three minutes after receiving the call. Wallace said both the family's cars, which were in the garage at the time, were destroyed in the flames, as was the rear addition attached the garage. Wallace said he believes the room to be a combination living and …

Fire ripped through a home on Bloomfield Township's north end Tuesday night causing substantial damage, officials said. Bloomfield Township firefighters responded to the 100 block of Barrington Road, — just northeast of the Square Lake Road and Woodward Avenue intersection — at about 10:30 p.m. after receiving calls from neighbors that smelled smoke, Fire Marshal Mike McCully said. Flames were shooting through the roof when firefighters arrived, McCully said. "We had our work ahead of us, but the fire was under control within an our," he said. Voters authorize renewal of 10-year millage that covers roughly one-third of public safety costs.
More than 81 percent of Bloomfield Township voters approved a 2.39-mill tax renewal Tuesday that will maintain the current level of public safety services. Unofficial election results from the Bloomfield Township Clerk's Office show the measure passed in all precincts Tuesday. At stake was the potential to lose roughly one-third of the budget allocated to police and fire-related services to township residents and businesses. A scenario that certainly would have meant layoffs in both the police and fire departments, said Township Supervisor Leo Savoie. "It's really good to see," said Savoie while greeting poll workers at Bloomfield Township Hall Tuesday Night. "It's good to see the community stand behind the departments and it's a strong …

Firefighters had just extinguished a garage fire when calls of a lightning strike came in during Tuesday morning's storm.
Bloomfield Township firefighters responded to separate calls of one house fire and possibly a second one sparked by a lightning strike Tuesday morning, officials said. Firefighters were called to the 1000 block of Timberlake after neighbors reported smelling smoke at about 9 a.m., Township Fire Marshall Mike McCully said. They found smoke streaming out an attached garage upon arrival and quickly doused the flames before they spread into the home, McCully said. No one was home at the time and no one was injured. McCully said the cause remains under investigation and that damage estimates were not available. Members of the Southfield Fire Department assisted at the scene. Just as crews were clearing that fire at about 10:30 a.m., reports of …
