10 Local Charities Compete in Suburban Collection $40K Giveaway

Vote daily for your favorite charity in The Great Charity Giveaway from now through 5 p.m. Friday.

Ten local charities are competing for $40,000 this week in The Great Charity Giveaway sponsored by The Suburban Collection. Established last year by the Troy-based automotive retail group, the winners of this year’s annual competition will be determined by visitors to The Suburban Collection’s website, www.SuburbanCollection.com, or their Facebook page.  In voting earlier this month, 10 charities were selected as finalists from 76 organizations nominated by local supporters. Bloomfields Rank High in Charitable Giving

Bloomfield Hills and Bloomfield Township residents are among some of the top givers in the country, according to national study by The Chronicle of Philanthropy.

Whether it's money to local synagogues or churches, food banks or animal shelters, metro Detroit residents are givers. Those are among the findings of a six-month project released Monday by The Chronicle of Philanthropy researching "giving habits" of Americans. The research breaks down giving by zip code, town, county and state and is based on a year’s worth of IRS 1040 forms from households nationwide. Researchers did a deep dive into various avenues of giving, including whether it was for religious or secular organizations and how much of one's household income was devoted to charity. VIDEO: Corvettes Cruise with Food for Needy

Hot rods cruise for a cause down Woodward on Wednesday to deliver donations to a Royal Oak church pantry.

Hundreds of Corvettes cruised down Woodward on Wednesday night for a cause. The classic sports cars filled the parking lot of St. John’s Episcopal Church on Woodward at 11 Mile bringing food and money donations for the Open Hands Food Pantry. The pantry serves the residents of Oakland County in times of emergency, providing food and other essential items. Pantry Chairman John Avery said the Royal Oak pantry, which was started in 1983, will provide groceries for thousands of people this year. This is the fourth year longtime 'Vette lover Larry Courtney of Warren organized the charity cruise. Courtney, who has been getting together with Corvette friends since 2003, said he decided to “kick things up a notch” and organize the food drive after…

Former Tiger Dave Bergman is All About the Cause

Platoon man on 1984 title team stays true to the Detroit area and keeps busy with his Redbirds, Sparky's CATCH and the Joe Niekro Foundation.

Dave Bergman came to Detroit in 1984 to help the Tigers win the World Series, and the former first baseman has been helping his community every day since. A resident of the Grosse Pointes since 1985, Bergman is all about the causes that are near and dear to his heart, donating his time and his talents to both his community and MLB family. Specifically, he is the co-founder of the Grosse Pointe Redbirds Baseball Organization, he's an active member on the Board of Trustees for CATCH and currently serves as treasurer for the Joe Niekro Foundation. Three to four times a week, Bergman can be found on the high school ballfields at Grosse Pointe North and Grosse Pointe South with his Redbirds teams.
