Some of Lahser High School's best athletes commit to their respective colleges and universities on national signing day.
Three Lahser High School seniors joined student athletes from across the country Wednesday in formally signing their letters of intent to compete at respective colleges, universities, and service academies next fall. David Attenson, football, Northwood University; Andrew Gikas, football, United States Air Force Academy; and Elena Miller, cross country, Northwestern, each took a pause from their traditional Wednesday routine for a ceremony at the high school entrance. The Bloomfield Hills Lahser boys and girls cross country teams won team titles at the Division 2 regional meet at Lake St. Clair Metropark on Friday.
The Bloomfield Hills Lahser boys and girls cross country teams won team championships at the Division 2 regional meet on Friday at Lake St. Clair Metropark. Elena Miller and Alana O'Mara finished first and second, respectively, for the Lahser girls cross country team. Christina Arens was seventh overall. For the Lahser boys team, Michael Gawlik, Cooper Bellinson, Nick Graves and Zahir Allarakhia all finished in the top 10. Complete results can be found on the MHSAA website.

The Knights, led by seniors Michael Gawlik and Nick Graves, took the OAA White Jamboree at Oakland University and the league crown.
The Lahser High School boys varsity cross country team won the OAA White Division title this season following a victory in the division Jamboree #3 Championships at Oakland University over the weekend. The team scored 36 points to win the meet, and had seven runners earn all-league honors for being in the top 15). They were: Michael Gawlik (2nd), Nick Graves (6th), Cooper Bellinson (8th), Bryce McClelland (9th), Max Threlkeld (11th), Zahir Allarakhia (12th), Kevin Allen (14th) and the 8th runner Ben Koehler finished 16th, Coach Nick Stration said. The team scored 35 points, and had four girls earn all-league honors in the top 15, Coach Nick Stration said. Birmingham high school's former long-time track and cross country coach was 101 when died at a Bloomfield Hills nursing center.
Visitation for the acclaimed Seaholm High School track and cross country coach Kermit Ambrose is Friday. Ambrose was 101 years old when he died Monday at the Woodward Hills Nursing Center in Bloomfield Hills. Born in Pierce, NE, Ambrose was one of the founders of the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association (MITCA) and led the Seaholm boys cross country team to state titles in 1959 and 1963. He retired in 1977. Ambrose is also a member of the Michigan Hall of Fame, where he is the namesake for that body's "Kermit Ambrose Award." He was also a member of the Catholic League Hall of Fame. Lahser girls take another regional crown and Baron Jarred Bratley earns regional champion honors with fastest time of any runner in Division 1 and 2.
Both Andover and Lahser high school cross country teams will be well represented in the the state finals meet next week after strong showings in regional competition Saturday. The Lahser girls varsity team finished first overall, claiming their third regional title since 2007. Five runners placed in the top 14, including Junior Elena Miller, who finished second overall at 18:48. She was just ahead of freshman teammate Jackie Bredenberg (18:50), who knocked a minute off her personal best time. Junior Alana O’Mara, who also finished 6th with a personal best (19:28), Junior Mara Gueli (11th-season best 20:11), and Isabel Fontana (13th-personal best 20:18) rounded out all-region honors. Improvements are evident in the young season on for both boys and girls teams.
Both the boys and girls cross country teams at Lahser will be much improved from last season. “The fact that we were so young really hurt us last year, but both teams are going to be much more competitive this fall,” head coach Nick Stration said. Despite what Station would categorize as a down campaign, the Knights qualified for the state meet in 2010. “The goal is to get back there and do better,” he said. Juniors Mike Gawlik and Zahir Allarakhia will be the boys squad’s top runners. The Knights girls team will also be highlighted by a talented trio of juniors in Alana O’ Mera, Elena Miller and Mara Gueli. The Knights showdown with Seaholm on Friday is the game of the week.
Football - Various There’s no love between the Lahser and Seaholm football programs. “Seaholm is a real big matchup for us,” Knights head coach Dan Loria said. “It’s a real key game, that’s our other rival besides Andover.” Friday's 7 p.m. contest on the Maples home field, will have added importance this year with both teams going into the game 2-0 in the Oakland Activities Association Blue division. For the Knights, their secondary will face its first true challenge. They gave up 35 points to Seaholm in a loss last season. This year the Maples offense is even better.
