The Lahser head coach will have a familiar trio of proven players, plus the best of Andover's squad to mold next winter in the inaugural season of Bloomfield Hills High School.
The first tip-off won't happen until late this fall, but the inaugural season of the Bloomfield Hills High School Black Hawks basketball season got under way of sorts last week with the first organizational meeting. And new Head Coach Duane Graves couldn't wait to get started. The long-time Lahser High School coach who piloted the Knights to consecutive Oakland Athletics Association Blue division and regional title crowns, was recently named the head coach of the Black Hawks. The Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan recognized the efforts of the junior teammates during the school's final season.
Members of the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan named Lahser High School's Yante Maten to the All-State Team for the 2012-13 season. Junior teammate Armand Cartwright was also recognized for his solid season with a special mention honor. Coaches from around the state nominate their players and vote for just handful out of hundreds of submissions, according to the BCAM website. Maten, an athletic and smooth-shooting center, led Lahser to consecutive league and district titles by averaging 15.6 points, 13.4 rebounds and 5.2 points per game this winter. The Mustangs clinched the school's 13th league crown with a 57-44 win over defending champ Dearborn Divine Child Sunday.
The Marian High School Mustangs are again Catholic High School League champions following a 57-44 victory over Dearborn Divine Child at the University of Detroit's Calihan Hall Sunday. The Mustangs led by 10 at halftime after playing tough zone defense, but it didn't last, according to miprepzone.com. The Falcons scored ten straight in the second stanza to tie the game at 30, and it remained close until sophomore Brittany Gray helped break it open with a steal of the inbounds pass for a basket and two put-back rebounds, said Bob Hanon, a member of the Marian Athletic Board. Tough, focused practices following an ugly loss to the Dragons in January help the Knights beat the league leaders 67-40.
Before their focus turned to more important things — namely today's snow day, members of Lahser High School's boys basketball team handed Lake Orion their first league loss Thursday in convincing fashion. Led by junior guard Armand Cartwright's 18 points and 9 assists, the Knights defeated the rival Dragons 67-40 before an inspired home crowd. The win avenged a 20-point defeat at Lake Orion on Jan. 24 that the team did not easily forget. The Knights travel well and improve to 3-2, but face tough league test this week.
The Lahser Knights defeated Birmingham Seaholm 51-33 Friday night and won their second consecutive road contest in the OAA Blue. The Knights (10-3, 3-2) kept momentum going from a 77-50 win at Berkley on Tuesday and jumped off to a 16-7 lead in the first quarter. They led 32-13 at halftime, taking full advantage of Paris Bass' absence, miprepzone.com reported. The Knights and Barons both secure their first wins in league play.
Both the Andover and Lahser high school boys varsity basketball teams rebounded from tough losses and protected home court Friday night. The Lahser Knights defeated Farmington 59-41 behind Khalil Gracey's 16 points and 9 rebounds, and a career-high 13 points from junior Logan McDonald. With the win, Lahser climbed to 8-2 and evened its record (1-1) in the OAA Blue, according to miprepzone.com. Yante Maten has thrilled Lahser High School fans with superb play for the better part of two seasons, and helped lead the Knights to district and OAA Gold League championships last year. You've probably read about him, but if you haven't seen him play, you'll want to take a peek at this video highlighting his prowess against Troy Athens on Jan. 10. Maten nearly missed a triple-double with 14 points, 15 rebounds, 9 assists, and 4 blocks.
