Prom Alert for Andover, Lahser Students and Parents: Patch Wants Your Photos

We know you take hundreds of photos, so send us a pic or two of pre-prom and prom festivities so we can feature them on Patch.

Did you like the photo galleries we posted of both the Andover High School and Lahser High School homecoming dances last fall? We'd like to do it again for the school's respective proms this weekend. But we need your help. Andover's prom is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Townsend Hotel. Lahser's prom also begins at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Knollwood Country Club. Since we can't be at both, and wouldn't want to favor coverage for one at the expense to the other, we'd love to have parents and teens help make a photo gallery they'd be proud to share with rest of the community. So much of prom is about who you’re with and the memories you make . . . and, of course what you're wearing. Let's see those photos! We know parents and students …

Lahser Baseball Hangs on to Beat Athens

The Knights overcome some sloppy defense in the third and fourth inning to beat the Red Hawks 10-8 on Monday.

BLOOMFIELD HILLS – The Lahser varsity baseball team’s offense is helping make up for its inconsistent defense. Robbie Emmitt and Kyle Riley drove in six runs to help the Knights erase deficits in the third and fourth inning in a 10-8 win over Oakland Activities Association Blue rival Troy Athens on Monday. “That’s the best part of this team, they do not quit,” said John Toth, coach of the Bloomfield Hills high school. “They know when they get down, they can turn it on and win games. They are so resilient and play so hard, as a coach I couldn’t be happier with the effort they give late in games.” After four errors in the third helped the Red Hawks go up 4-0, Riley hit a two-run double in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead in half…

The Biffstock School Radio Fundraiser Hits Airwaves Thursday, Friday

The 36th annual pledge drive raises money for the Bloomfield Hills student-run station.

It’s time again for annual radio-a-thon on WBFH, the Bloomfield Hills Schools' radio station. The station, known to locals as “The Biff,” will kick off its 36th Biffstock pledge drive starting at 8 a.m. Thursday and run until 11 p.m. Friday. It allows WBFH students to collect money and pledges from listeners in the community who’d like to help underwrite expenses for radio station enhancements. “Our radio-a-thon is a fun event for the radio students and it gives listeners a chance to support community radio with their donations,” WBFH Biffstock Chair and Andover senior Zac Barnett said in a press release.  All 28 WBFH staff students from Andover and Lahser high schools will be on the air for one-hour shifts during the pledge, for a total …

Local Swimmers Compete in YMCA National Championship Events This Week

Birmingham Blue Dolphins, other area teams participate in North Carolina meet.

Dozens of Southeast Michigan's leading young swimmers begin today to compete in Greensboro, NC, in a four-day national championship meet. Teams from Birmingham, Royal Oak, Farmington Hills and four other area communities will compete against youths from around the country at the YMCA Short Course National Championship. Individual and relay events run Monday through Thursday. Two dozen members of the Birmingham Blue Dolphins (BBD), representing the Birmingham Family YMCA, are making that team's 42nd appearance at the nationals. Its competitors, aged 12-18, are from 12 public and private schools around the region – including two middle schools. BBD swimmers in 2011 earned three first-place medals and finished ninth overall. This year's team …

Former Lahser Knight Keeps NFL Dream Despite Challenges

Wide receiver Greg Raspberry goes into an organized workout session with NFL scouts later this month after a lifetime of preparation.

Lahser High School alumnus Greg Raspberry's path to stardom in the National Football League may have taken a detour through West Bloomfield Schools, but he's a better player for it. Raspberry, 24, recently finished his first year as Orchard Lake Middle School's seventh grade boys basketball team head coach (record: 12-1) after working in the fall as an assistant coach on the West Bloomfield High School varsity football team as well as head coach of the Lakers' freshman football team (record: 8-1). He's done it with a smile on his face, although he'd be the first to say that he'd prefer to be on the field.  Raspberry hasn't played much since the 2011 NFL lockout cut short a chance to showcase his talents at an organized workout session in …

Lahser Boys Basketball Beats First-Place Oxford 63-51

The Knights regain a share of first place of the Oakland Activities Association Gold division with a hard-fought win Thursday night.

BLOOMFIELD HILLS – Lahser’s bid Thursday night to regain a share of first place in the Oakland Activities Association Gold division was a lot closer than it should have been. The Knights (13-5; 6-2 OAA Gold) were up 24 points on first-place Oxford early in the fourth quarter when the referees' whistles started to dictate the flow the of the game. Most of those whistles didn’t go Lahser’s way. A career-high 20 points from junior Andrew Gikas helped the Knights hold on to even the season series between the teams with a 63-51 win. “The referees didn’t keep control of the game and when they didn’t keep control of the game the kids lost control of the game,” Lahser High School coach Duane Graves said. “My kids got a little frazzled, but hats …

5 More Things to Know About High School Consolidation in Bloomfield Hills

The planning for a public bond to fund unifying Andover and Lahser high schools under one roof continues.

A unified Bloomfield Hills High School is slated to open on one or two campuses in the fall of 2013. The Bloomfield Hills Schools Board of Education and administration is entering the third week of town hall meetings on the pending bond to fund construction at the Andover High School site. A few weeks ago, we wrote about five things you should know about consolidation heading into 2012. Here's another update on developments and the big decisions looming ahead: Aside from the dollar figures attached to the bond, which depending on the options chosen have been estimated anywhere between $58 million to $82 million, everyone wants to know when they're going to the polls. Superintendent Rob Glass said the benefits to a May election outweigh …

As a former Lahser graduate I must say that the buildings are not in any shape to stand, let alone house more students. I'm surprised that the roof hasn't caved in yet. I remember in my four years at Lahser, any time there was a rainstorm there would be garbage buckets in the hall to catch the water leaking from the ceiling. Try to navigate the halls with those in your way. While I really …   more ›

Bloomfield Hills Schools Takes Consolidation Message to the People

The district continues its series of town hall meetings tonight and Thursday to educate residents and get feedback about pending millage request.

The public push to build a combined Bloomfield Hills High School with at least $65 million in taxpayer funds continues tonight with another of the dozen town hall meetings Superintendent Rob Glass will lead over the next month. Tonight's meeting is scheduled for 7-9 p.m. at Way Elementary School, and Thursday's is scheduled for 7-9 p.m. at East Hills Middle School. Though he's been talking about for longer, Glass formally started the effort last week with a presentation before roughly 30 parents and residents at the Doyle Center. For roughly 45 minutes, Glass navigated attendees through the recent history of the debate to merge Andover and Lahser high schools, as well as the past failures to muster enough public support to do so. He also…

I understand that the BHSD administration and BOE is moving forward with consolidating both schools. I also understand that some people are in favor of this decision. It amazes me, though. As leaders in education they have a responsibility to stay informed regarding educational research. Currently, research overwhelmingly says that SMALL SCHOOLS WORK! In fact, in study after study, student …   more ›

Poll: Is Too Much Homework Stressing Out Students in High School?

In response to 'Race to Nowhere' reaction, Bloomfield Hills high school students will have homework-free vacations and some designated weekends.

Upon receiving feedback from parents after recent viewings of the controversial Race to Nowhere documentary, both high schools in the Bloomfield Hills Schools district altered some practices regarding homework. Students at Andover and Lahser will now have homework-free vacations and some select weekends, according to a recent district-wide email bulletin. There will be no homework assignments issued the weekend prior to the Michigan Merit Exams in the spring, the mid-winter break weekend, and spring break. No assignments will due on the Monday or Tuesday following those breaks, the bulletin stated. The change was implemented after department heads at both schools met to address important issues raised in the critically-acclaimed film, …

Lahser's Nate Cole Named Football All-Star

The senior defensive back caps off stellar season with well-earned distinction for play on the gridiron.

Lahser High School's Nate Cole can add all-star to the list of praiseworthy titles he earned during a standout season in varsity football. The senior defensive back, who was also named Homecoming King in October, made the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association's all-star roster for the East-West All-Star game on June 30 at Central Michigan University. Both teams are made up of 44 of the best high school football players around the state. Cole will play for the East team, coached by Mike Giannone of Macomb Dakota High School. Cole earned all-OAA honors, selected by league coaches, in November along with six teammates after the Lahser's 6-4 playoff season. The team lost 28-7 in the first round of playoffs at Redford Thurston. He…
