Lahser Track Athletes Headed to State Finals

The school will have 16 boys and girls athletes compete for state titles in the school's final season.

More than a dozen Lahser High School athletes will compete in the MHSAA State Finals for track, according to Head Coach Nick Stration. The athletes qualified following the regional competitions over the weekend. Lahser's boys team scored 116 points to win the regional crown in the school's final season before merging with Andover High School next fall.  The finals will take place June 1 at Forest Hills Eastern near Grand Rapids. Andover, Lahser Skiers Make All-State

Nine Barons and one Knight earn the special designation after successful final seasons.

We recently told you about the memorable performances by the members of the Andover High School boys’ and girls’ ski teams this year, and their strong finishes in the State Finals. This week, the MHSAA announced that nine Barons and on skier from Lahser High School earned earned All-State recognition. The special designations added to an already special season for both teams given the merger with Lahser to the new Bloomfield Hills High School next fall. Lahser Boys Climb Over Maples Into Second Place

The Knights travel well and improve to 3-2, but face tough league test this week.

  The Lahser Knights defeated Birmingham Seaholm 51-33 Friday night and won their second consecutive road contest in the OAA Blue. The Knights (10-3, 3-2) kept momentum going from a 77-50 win at Berkley on Tuesday and jumped off to a 16-7 lead in the first quarter. They led 32-13 at halftime, taking full advantage of Paris Bass' absence, miprepzone.com reported. Seaholm's senior star forward was suspended shortly before the contest, and further details were unavailable. Lahser's Yante Maten scored 16 points and blocked five shots. Junior Joey Nagridge scored 11 points to lead Seaholm (9-4, 2-3). The win, coupled with Harrison's overtime loss to Berkley Friday night means the Knights are tied with the Hawks for second-place in the league. …

Andover, Lahser Ladies Win; Boys Teams Face Road Tests

It was finals week for students at Andover and Lahser, but there's no break in the busy season schedule for both the boy's and girl's basketball teams.

Lady Knights get even Lahser topped Birmingham Seaholm 56-52 at home Friday to even their league record (4-4 OAA Blue) and climb to 5-9 overall. Suzanne Miller netted 18 points, and Katie Stewart and Shailynn Brown each scored 12 in the victory, miprepzone.com reported. Next up for the Knights is a road test against Southfield High School at 7 p.m. Thursday. Both the varsity and junior varsity games scheduled for Imlay City on Wednesday were canceled, according to schedulestar.com. Cranbrook, Country Day Students Named MHSAA Scholar-Athlete Finalists

Two local students are among the 120 competing for a $1,000 scholarship based on a combination of athletic and academic success.

Two Bloomfield Hills-area students were recently named finalists for the Michigan High School Athletic Association's annual Scholar Athlete Award. Cranbrook-Kingswood's Matthew Liu and Michael Azzopardi of Detroit Country Day are both among the potential recipients this year, according to the MHSAA website. Liu, a senior, is a captain on the Cranes swim and dive team, and is following up strong performances in last season's Division 3 finals. Michael Azzopardi, a senior, is a standout baseball player for the Yellow Jackets. Of the 120 finalists announced Friday, 32 will be chosen to receive the $1,000 scholarships. Brother Rice Wins Eighth State Football Title in a Thriller

Not one, but two trick plays for touchdowns in the final 3:29 secures the win against Muskegon in Division 2 high school football state final, 35-28.

DETROIT — Legendary Brother Rice High School football coach Al Fracassa proved that he still has a trick or two up his sleeve at age 80 with the Warriors' Division 2 high school football state championship win over Muskegon Friday. After a Muskegon touchdown tied the score at 28 with 2:13 left to play, Brother Rice junior kick returner Jason Alessi received an across-the-field lateral on the ensuing kickoff and ran 91 yards for the game-winning score.  The 35-28 win over Muskegon (12-2) gave Brother Rice (12-2) its first back-to-back state title in Fracassa's 44 years in Bloomfield Hills and the Warriors' eighth title all-time.  "When your back is up against the wall, you try it ... take chances sometimes. I think the point that GW was trying to make is that the top players are RECRUITED from a large Metro detroit area. Much further away than any normal student would travel to come to that school. Same goes for DCDS, the other private school team that made it to the state game. Amazing how that works.   more ›

Orchard Lake St. Mary's Routs Avondale in District Football Final

With an eye toward the goal line and the score tied, the Orchard Lake St. Mary's varsity football team gambled and won on fourth down with a running play up the middle to keep the drive alive against Auburn Hills Avondale. Then, they did it again.  And again.  The defending Div. 3 state champion Eaglets utilized their ground attack to near-perfection on a crisp Saturday afternoon at home to beat Avondale, 49-14, for the district championship. Lahser Thumps Groves, Improves to 3-0; Andover Falls Again

The Knights are 3-0 for the second season in a row and are tied atop the OAA Blue with a home game against Royal Oak next Friday.

  The final seasons of Andover and Lahser high school football before the merger to the Bloomfield Hills High School in 2013 continued Friday just as the first two weeks concluded: Lahser on top, and Andover searching for a win. Just like last year's season-opening contest, Lahser used a balanced air and ground attack on the way to a convincing 35-6 victory on the road at Groves, according to the MHSAA website. The game was among eight contests featured on MHSAA's Football Friday Overtime Show on Fox Sports Detroit, and you can view highlights of the game on the MHSAA Prep Zone streaming page (the Lahser-Groves highlights begin about 10 minutes in). Here's a look at this year's varsity football schedule for Andover and Lahser high schools.
