Roeper Names New Middle School Director

“At the core of my educational philosophy is a desire for active collaboration in the learning community," said Colleen Potocki.

  The Roeper School has a new director for its middle school. Colleen Potocki, currently an English teacher at the school's Birmingham campus, will take over effective July 1, according to a news release issued Wednesday afternoon. “I am looking forward to the adventure of the middle school director position and remain challenged by and dedicated to the Roeper philosophy and community,” said Potocki, who has more than two decades of experience in the classroom. She succeeds Carolyn Borman, who served as middle school director on an interim basis since 2009. Hollywood's Michelle Williams Praises Roeper During 'Oz' Filming

The star of 'Oz the Great and Powerful' said she and her daughter were more than pleased with the Bloomfield Hills school during six months of filming in Michigan.

  She may have been only been here for about six months, but actress Michelle Williams said that was long enough for the Roeper School in Bloomfield Hills to leave a lasting impression. During promotional interviews for her latest project 'Oz the Great and Powerful,' which opens in theaters Friday, the star talked about living in Metro Detroit while filming at the Michigan Motion Picture Studios in Pontiac. Williams, who plays Glinda the Good Witch, also made it point to praise the long-standing private school on Woodward Avenue during a an interview with Fox 2's Lee Thomas that broadcast earlier this week. Roeper to Celebrate Fiesta-Style at Annual MOSAIC Auction

Prizes at the annual auction include Disney Park Hopper passes and a two-night stay at a Parisian hotel.

The Bloomfield Hills-based Roeper School will raise scholarships funds this winter at the school's MOSAIC auction. With a theme of '¡Viva Roeper!' the annual auction is scheduled for March 16 at the Detroit Athletic Club. Roeper, which also has an upper school campus in Birmingham, caters to gifted students. Funds raised at the MOSAIC auction benefits Roeper's Mariann Hoag Financial Aid Program and is named so because of the "many different people from so many different backgrounds that come together to make the event and Roeper so great," schools spokesperson Carri Hammers said. "Roeper strongly supports the notion that giftedness is not limited by gender, ethnicity, race or socioeconomic status," she added. New this year, Roeper wil be …

Roeper Students Named State Champs in Chess

More than a dozen young players received medals for their performance during the Michigan Scholastic Team Championship earlier this month.

February was a good month for the young chess players at the Roeper School. On Feb. 2, the Roeper chess team won multiple awards at the Michigan Scholastic Team Championship, most notably the K-3 team, which took home first place and was named state champions. In addition, the K-5 team finished second in the state while the K-5 reserve teams received trophies for finishing in fifth and seventh place. The Roeper chess team is made up of 26 players from the Roeper Lower School, located on Woodward Avenue in Bloomfield Hills, and is coached by Diallo Smith. Private School Open Houses in the Bloomfield Hills Area

Several of the fine institutions in Bloomfield Township, Bloomfield Hills, and nearby will open their doors to prospective parents this week.

Detroit Performer Mike Ellison Helps Roeper Students Plan Diversity Day

This year's Diversity Day will feature student-led workshops on how to foster respect and sensitivity among young people.

The students and staff at Birmingham's Roeper School will be celebrating their annual Diversity Day with a little help from a big name this year. Actor, songwriter, poet and Detroit-based performer Mike Ellison has been working all year with various staff members and 19 students at the Roeper Upper School to plan the 2012 Diversity Day, to be held all day today at the school's Birmingham campus. The goal of Roeper's Diversity Day is to build community by focusing on how to honor all parts of a person — from their religion, apperance, political views and more. Chess teams from the Roeper Lower School took home first place in the state club chess championship last weekend.

Last weekend was a big one for the young chess players from the Roeper School's lower campus in Bloomfield Hills. The Roeper K-3 Chess Team took home first place at the 2012 Michigan Scholastic Club Championship in Lansing on Nov. 17. The tournament was open to students in grades K-12 and with students competing as a team and individually. The team, which is made up of 30 students, is coached by Diallo Smith, of Detroit. In addition to placing first, the following Roeper students received medals for individual achievement at the tournament: "There is a very high caliber of skill at these events as most clubs have been competing for much longer and are regionally based, which means they pull from a much larger group of students," Smith said…

Roeper Students Combat Hunger With Empty Bowls Event

The Roeper School expects more than 300 students, teachers and community members at fundraiser intended to raise awareness of hunger.

The Bloomfield Hills-based and Birmingham-based Roeper School will host its 10th annual Empty Bowls event on Dec. 18 to benefit Lighthouse Services of Oakland County. Themed "Give Your Bowl a Face" in 2012, Roeper expects more than 300 students, teachers and parents to attend and participate in the Empty Bowls program. This year's bowls will be created and decorated by Roeper fourth and fifth graders. The Empty Bowls program was started in 1990 at Bloomfield Hills' Lahser High School. There, art teachers were trying to help students searching for a way to raise funds to support a local food drive. What evolved was a class project to make ceramic bowls for a fundraising meal. Roeper School to Hold Memorial Service for Late Founder

A memorial and picnic reception honoring the late Annemarie Roeper will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Roeper Lower School.

The Roeper School will be hosting a memorial service this weekend to honor Annemarie Roeper, one of the school's late founders. Annemarie, who passed away on May 11 near her home in Oakland, CA when she was 93, founded the Birmingham- and Bloomfield Hills-based Roeper School with her late husband George in 1941. The school, which currently has 560 students enrolled in preschool through high school, caters to gifted students and when it was founded, was one of the first schools to do so in the U.S. To celebrate Annemarie's life, Roeper will be holding a memorial service, picnic, reception and "story time" beginning at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Roeper's lower school campus in Bloomfield Hills. After Co-Founder’s Death, Roeper Students Urged to ‘Make the World a Better Place’

Students and staff at the Roeper Middle and Upper School campus remember Annemarie Roeper at morning tribute.

The legacy of the late Roeper School co-founder Annemarie Roeper weighed heavily on everyone’s minds at the school’s middle and upper school campus Tuesday morning. “We are the safeguards of (Roeper’s) philosophy,” senior Gavin Buckley said. “We’re here now to make the world a better place.” Middle and upper school teachers, administrators and students gathered at the Birmingham campus Tuesday morning to honor Roeper, who passed away Friday in California at the age of 93. Even more importantly, Tuesday was a time for the Roeper community to remember and reaffirm Roeper’s educational philosophy and how it continues to shape the lives of Roeper students.
