Mexican Restaurant Slated for Former Bloomfield Big Boy

Bloomfield Township Planning Commission expected to review site plan at public hearing Monday night.

The former Big Boy in Bloomfield Township has a new owner that wants to bring a taste of the southwest to Telegraph Road. The owners of Riverstone Hospitality, LLC, James Belinson and Chef Zackary Sklar, petitioned the township for special zoning variances and a Class C liquour license for a new restaurant earlier this year, and are expected to discuss the project tonight before the Bloomfield Township Planning Commission. The public hearing on the project is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at Township Hall. The Mex, as it is described in township documents, will be about 6,300 square feet on a main floor, new mezzanine and two places for seasonal outdoor seating. The exterior will consist of a southwester color scheme and a newly-designed …

Trader Joe's Taking Shape in Bloomfield

The exterior sign is up and the interior is coming together at the market's new locale at Telegraph and Maple.

In September, we wrote about how Trader Joe's move from Farmington Hills to Bloomfied Township understandably put off some current patrons. Conversely, Bloomfield-area residents and business owners are more enthused, particularly since the construction work is starting to show visible results. Carpenters and electrical contractors are hard at work at the new location on the west side of Telegraph between the Starbucks and SavOn Drugs in Bloomfield Plaza. Though store officials have yet to announce an official open date, they did target next month "We've got some reasons to be optimistic," said Bill Wahl, owner of the nearby Relax the Back store, as he noted the changes to the Maple Theater nearby, and the opening of the Bagger Dave's …

Trade Joe's should thrive anywhere... great off-brands, wonderful quality foods, nothing made in or from China (that in and of itself is a miracle), very nicely priced,, plus pleasant people and environment... not a union shop of 'attitude' workers - therefore everyone is mostly in a good mood... and so much more... Now, try to beat that!!!   more ›

New Day Dawns for Reopening Maple Theater

Bloomfield Township's one-and-only landmark theater is about to embark on a new business model that is more focused on customer experience.

After months of extensive renovations, Bloomfield Township's Maple Theater reopens its doors to patrons tonight as part of a special celebration to benefit a local children's charity. From now through the weekend, the theater's new ownership will donate proceeds to Variety, The Children’s Charity, with the exclusive run of “The Sessions” starring Helen Hunt and John Hawkes. Patrons will have the familiar feeling of leaving the Maple knowing they've seen a quality film, but their overall experience should be totally different. The 37-year-old landmark underwent more than $1 million in extensive renovations that will now allow movie theaters with larger screens, a total of 700 seats, and more legroom and wider aisles, said principal owner …

Retailers Optimistic After Start of Holiday Shopping Season

Number of shoppers out after Thanksgiving exceeds last year's record.

It was a busy holiday shopping weekend along Bloomfield's main commercial coridoors as big-box retailers did their best to lure people in with early openings and limited specials. According to a National Retail Federation (NRF) survey conducted by BIGresearch, 226 million shoppers visited stores and websites Thursday through Saturday last week, a record up from last year's 212 million shoppers. In addition, the NRF reports that the average shopper spent $398.62 during the holiday weekend, up from $365.34 last year. Total spending reached an estimated $52.4 billion. Locally, despite the onset of mobile apps and other innovations, there were still plenty of reasons for people to show up in stores, even if that meant standing in line. Small …

30 Days of Giving, Day 4: Habitat for Humanity

Lend a hand this holiday season by volunteering at Habitat for Humanity's ReStore or constructing a home.

This is the fourth in a 30-day series of ways Patch community members can give back. We hope you'll take part in this 30 Days of Giving, and take the spirit beyond the holidays, because there is "need" all year long. The organization builds and renovates houses annually and is always in need of a crew of volunteers for completing house projects and manning the ReStore, which is located at 150 Osmun St. in Pontiac. Volunteers for construction projects are still needed on Tuesdays and Thursdays through the holiday season; volunteers for ReStore are needed Tuesday through Saturday. …

30 Days of Giving, Day 3: Charitable Holiday Cards

Greeting cards allow you to fall back on the "old" way of reaching out with holiday cheer – and benefit a charity post-haste.

This is the third in a 30-day series of ways Patch community members can give back.  We hope you'll take part in this 30 Days of Giving, and take the spirit beyond the holidays, because there is "need" all year long. With texting, email, Tweeting, Facebook and a slew of other technologically savvy ways to stay in contact with friends and family, communication via "snail" mail has certainly plundered. But during the holidays, instead of sending a text or eGreeting, take the time to send a Christmas card to everyone you care about – and help out a charity while you’re at it. Hundreds of national charities, and many local ones as well, offer a variety of holiday card options to choose from. By purchasing cards through the nonprofits, some (or…
