Hey Michigan! Show us your Mitten pride in photos from anywhere in the state. We'll award weekly prizes for the photos that say 'Michigan' in content, tone and spirit.
You don't need to be Ansel Adams to win our weekly Your Patch of Michigan photo contest this summer! The single qualification for photos you submit is that they say "Michigan." If it oozes "Michigan," it qualifies. Each weekly winner will earn a prize. This week's prize is a one month pass for unlimited visits to the new SuiteSweat infared sauna studio in Novi, valued at $79. The infared saunas are used for health and wellness, including weight loss, detoxification, heart health and pain relief. Last week, about 120 photos were submitted to the contest, showing off some of what is the best Michigan has to offer – and more importantly, what Michigan means to each person. Sometimes Michigan's hot spells actually make us long for the cooler days of winter, so this week's Your Patch of Michigan photo contest winner was as welcome as a cool breeze. Among the nearly 100 photographs submitted in last week's Your Patch of Michigan photo contest was Catherine Sareini's picture of girls in matching outfits enjoying a snowy winter day in Dearborn's Fairlane Woods. Sareini's entry was selected as the winner for the week of June 18-24, the fourth week of the Your Patch of Michigan 2012 photo contest. There are many places, events and people that make Michigan special – from Up North, downstate, in the U.P. and everywhere in between. Michigan has an allure that cannot be denied. So why not share your visions of Michigan in photos in our Your Patch of Michigan photo contest, and possibly win a prize for doing so? Last week, nearly 100 photos were submitted to the contest, showing off some of what is the best Michigan has to offer – and more importantly, what Michigan means to each person. Some determined Girl Scouts and a chilly mom make for a true Michigan moment caught on camera to capture the weekly prize.
With more than 100 photographs submitted in last week's Your Patch of Michigan photo contest, choosing a winner should have been difficult. But it wasn't. That's because this week's winner screamed "Michigan." When Angelina Sacco of Macomb planned to take her Girl Scout troop camping in Lexington, MI, in early June, they were hoping for warm weather to swim at the beach. However, in true Michigan fashion, temperatures dropped from the upper 80s the weekend before the trip to the 60s the weekend of the camp out. "On Saturday, the weather was partly sunny and a high of about 65 degrees. The lifeguard showed up and the girls were determined to go to the beach, so we did," Sacco said. With more than 100 stunning photos submitted, choosing a winner was not easy.
For many people, Michigan means lakes and beaches. It's the beauty, the fresh air, the beach walks and bonfires and family cottages and memories of vacations that make it special. Megan Gunnell's family has a place up north near Onekama and it was on the Lake Michigan beach there that she took the photo that wins the second week of the Your Patch of Michigan 2012 photo contest. "This photo was taken about 3 years ago. At the time, my daughter Hannah was 3 and my son Elliott was 7," Gunnell said. What's better on a hot Michigan day than cooling off with a run through a sprinkler? That's what Evan Katz did and the expressive photo of him doing so wins the first week of the Your Patch of Michigan 2012 photo contest. The photo was submitted by Evan's mom, Addy Seligman Katz of West Bloomfield. "It was taken Friday of Memorial Day weekend outside my house," Seligman Katz said. Evan is 8 1/2 years old and goes to Lone Pine Elementary, heading to West Hills Middle School in the fall.
