Making Way For the New Life Time Fitness in Bloomfield Township

The national chain's newest 'Executive' fitness center will open next summer near the corner of Telegraph and Long Lake roads.

Demolition is well under way for the new Executive Life Time Fitness that will open next year in Bloomfield Township. Crews began knocking down the collection of old and vacant offices on the stretch of southbound Telegraph Road near Long Lake Road earlier this month, and now the structures are reduced to just piles of broken concrete and wooden shards. It is the second phase of demolition and construction near the corner following the completion of the new Max Broock in the building next door in the 4000 block of Telegraph Road. The buildings once housed Mr. Tony's Barber Shop and the Piazza Hair Salon, which closed earlier this year. Some parking for patrons will be available in front, but the majority will be behind the building with …

Most of us that live in the Township, refer to our area as Bloomfield Hills, not to mislead anyone... but to refer to the area know as Bloomfield. No one in their right mind cares if it is the Hills or the Twp. Plllllease.   more ›

Fifth Tavern Coming to Telegraph at Square Lake in Bloomfield Township

The Bloomfield Township Board of Trustees recently approved plans for the new restaurant and bar to take over the long-vacated Rio Bravo.

Last spring, we highlighted the vacant restaurant site at 2262 S. Telegraph Rd. on Bloomfield Township's north side and asked readers what their vision was. This week, the reconstruction of the former Rio Bravo restaurant at southbound Telegraph Road near Square Lake Road, took off in earnest. And you might have noticed the landmark lighthouse on the structure was replaced with a blue tarp. Closed since 2003, the spot had long been a neighborhood destination, first as a Mountain Jack's before going 'Tex-Mex' menu. Readers seemed to overwhelmingly support a family-style restaurant in the comments on our previous story, and that's what it appears will move in. The Fifth Tavern, described as a family-style restaurant with a high-end sports …

I don't think so. We don't need another "family style sports bar". We need fun, fresh, good-tasting, nicely prepared food that isn't over-priced.   more ›

What Are They Saying About the New Cafe ML in Bloomfield Township?

Bloomfield Township's latest restaurant opened it's doors and is making an impression on local diners.

Cafe ML, the latest offering from local restaurateur Bill Roberts, celebrated its first opening weekend, and left a favorable impression, according to what patrons active on social media.  "Two thumbs up! Great addition to the neighborhood. Creative menu, beautifully prepared dishes and exceptional service. A winner," wrote Doug Molloy on the restaurant's Facebook page. "Great place! dinner was delicious, and the atmosphere is top notch, help was very good," commented Tino Orozco. And perhaps Connie Krandall summed up the new decor best with: "You wouldn't know it was ever a Blockbuster and the food was delicious!" Roberts, owner of the Roberts Restaurant Group that opened Roadside B&G on the township's north side last year, said the new …

Visions for Vacancies: What Belongs Here?

This is one of the remaining open spots in the Kingswood Square development on the Bloomfield Township's north side.

It remains one of the few vacant properties in the bustling Kingswood Square development along the Woodward Avenue corridoor, just north of Square Lake Road in Bloomfield Township. Bloomfield-Bloomfield Hills Patch wants to know: What's your vision for this property? You don't need to be a commercial developer or city planner — or have money to invest in a business project — to have the next great idea. We just want to hear about it. Please leave your ideas in the comments section below. This is part of an occasional series; we're excited to hear about your ideas for vacant spaces around town. Bloomfield Hills Schools to Buy Property on Franklin Road

The district will spend $695,000 for the property to become the new home for physical plant services.

The Bloomfield Hills Schools will relocate it's physical plant services department to a commercial property on Franklin Road just north of Square Lake Road. The district's board of education on Thursday unanimously approved to purchase the building at 2258 Franklin Road for $695,000 in existing funds, and will begin plans to transition this summer. The department is currently located on the Andover High School campus, and will need to move when demolition of most of the building begins this summer as part of the New Bloomfield Hills High School construction. The new facility, which will merge the Andover, Lahser and Model high school student populations, is slated to open in fall 2015. Construction plans show the current physical plant …

I'm not sure of the connection between this building or the farm or another place and moving the kids between buildings. The maintenance, custodial, and skilled trades location doesn't have anything to do with that. It does seem fiscally prudent. I understand that some in the community will never be happy with what the board does but there are some people who are driving their personal agendas. …   more ›

What Belongs in This Bloomfield Plaza Vacancy?

Our Visions for Vacancies series highlights one of the remaining open spots in the revitalized corner of Maple and Telegraph roads.

We've recently told you about the openings of Bagger Dave's Legendary Burger Tavern, and the new Trader Joe's in Bloomfield Township. But just a few doors down still looms another big vacancy — that inlcudes the former The Crust Pizza and Wine Bar location — at the Bloomfield Plaza shopping center located at Maple and Telegraph roads. I don't know if it's true, but I have heard that Kroger's still owns their parcel and does not want to allow another grocery store to move into the space. It would be awesome if Hiller's relocated there and developed a store as beautiful as the one at 14 Mile west of Haggerty. Nino Salvaggio's or Papa Joe's would also be great additions.   more ›

What Could Bloomfield Park Become?

Our Visions for Vacancies series asks about the possibilities for Bloomfield Township's biggest commercial availability . . . and community eyesore.

Earlier this week, we told you about the foreclosure rights for the long-vacant Bloomfield Park property finally going on sale after a protracted legal battle. According to the legal settlement between Bloomfield Township, Pontiac and the developers — which still has pending issues on appeal unrelated to the sale — the property can't just become anything. Though the initial deal for the 700,000 square-feet that included mixed commercial, retail and residential space floundered, the Oakland County Circuit Court ruling stipulates that parameters negotiated in 2002 must still be followed. Like casinos? Sorry. The deal specifically prohibits casinos and similar gaming facilities, as well as adult entertainment and cell towers, documents show. …

I think there would be a work around the issue of most of the property being in Pontiac. Natural park like infrastructure combined with business offerings to maximize usage and provision of services for the citizens. Not to mention....jobs for the people.   more ›

Bloomfield Park Foreclosure Rights Headed For Sale

The massive eyesore near the Bloomfield Township-Pontiac border is for sale following a lengthy legal battle.

Bloomfield Park, the 700,000-square-foot collection of unfinished concrete slabs and skeletal building shells on the township's north side is apparently up for sale. Following a four-year legal battle — that still has appeal issues pending — the property is officially on the market. However, some experts believe it won't fetch nearly as much as planners hoped when they started developing the ambitious project years ago, according to Crain's Detroit. William Bubniak of the Southfield-based Farbman Group, confirmed the real estate brokerage and property management firm began marketing the property last week and has the exclusive rights to do so, Crain's reported. San Francisco-based Wells Fargo Bank has foreclosure rights to the property on …

I expect that there are many out there who are just as curious but don't have the time to talk to the Township, so I hope you write a blog when you get your answers. Personally, I have more confidence in Bloomfield Township than in the City of Pontiac when it comes to development proposals, site review, etc.   more ›

The Trader Joe's Contest Winner Is . . .

One lucky loyal customer will receive a $50 gift card for entering a photo of their favorite Trader Joe's product.

The Bloomfield Township Trader Joe's launched on Jan. 15 with a lot of love from locals, and loyal customers that didn't mind travelling a little bit further to get their fix. We at Bloomfield-Bloomfield Hills Patch did our part by launching a photo contest to see just how many different products people were looking forward to getting at the new store at Telegraph and Maple roads. And readers from Bloomfield, Rochester, Northville — and many places in between — responded by posting photos of a wide variety of snacks, meal components and personal products all available at the new location. Of note: of the 40 entries, no product was repeated. As promised, we're providing a $50 gift card to one lucky reader and randomly selected Gina Agne, …
