American House and the DSO Expand Program or Seniors

The partnership will bring world-class musicians to more than 20 American House communities in 2013.

  The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) and American House Senior Living Communities will bring individual musicians and small ensembles from the orchestra to engage with residents at over 20 American House locations in the metro Detroit area throughout 2013, officials said in a recent news release. The expanded partnership between the two will also cover a wide geographic area spanning from Roseville to Westland and Riverview to Pontiac. The DSO launched its Neighborhood Residency Initiative (NRI) in the fall of 2011. Detroit native and Maestro Joseph Silverstein conducted without notes and played the violin with expertise, according to users who went for free after winning a contest. Users said afterward that it was a sight to see. "The concert tonight was awesome! The conductor was marvelous! He used no music to read from, knew all the pieces by heart, played the violin himself flawlessly ... and is 80 years old!" wrote Jay Waldman of Farmington in an email, who entered simply by answering a question on Patch last week. World Famous Maestro Enthralls Andover Symphony Students

Detroit native Joseph Silverstein plays for students in midst of weekend tour with the DSO.

  The student musicians of the Andover High School Symphony Orchestra were treated  to a special visit by Detroit native Maestro Joseph Silverstein on Wednesday. Silverstein, in worldwide demand as both a conductor and violin soloist, is in town to conduct and play with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra this weekend, including a performance at Kirk in the Hills Saturday. He spent time with the students rehearsing their repertoire for the upcoming District Orchestra Festival, and their April trip to Scotland. Maestro Joseph Silverstein held the rapt attention of every student in the room as he conducted, taught, and told stories from his illustrious music career.
