Three Bloomfield-Area Football Players To Watch in the Playoffs

Will these players be the difference makers in tonight's second round of the MHSAA football playoffs?

The second round of the MHSAA football playoffs resume tonight and the Bloomfield area will be well represented in two big contests in Division 2 and Division 4. Here are three of players to watch:

Jason Alessi, Brother Rice High School

The standout three-sport athlete handles placekicking, safety responsibilities and has been known to make outstanding plays on offense and special teams when it counts most. Last year he rambled down the sideline for a memorable 91-yard kickoff return to secure back-to-back Division 2 titles for the Warriors. He showed his knack for late-game heroics again this season when he snared a 34-yard touchdown pass as time expired against Catholic League rival Warren De La Salle.

Tyler Wiegers, Detroit Country Day

The senior quarterback continues to impress with his accuracy and arm strength, and is proving why Rutgers plucked him for their inaugural season in the Big Ten Conference. Wiegers steered the Yellow Jackets offense on several successful drives and scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak play in last week's 49-14 win over Clawson.

Alex Malzone, Brother Rice High School

The junior quarterback has the Warriors positioned to make it three straight Division 2 titles, and one to cap the legendary career of Head Coach Al Fracassa. Malzone passed for 1,928 yards and 14 touchdowns this season, according to Mazpreps.com. He threw for 185 yards and one score in last week's 42-0 rout of Groves.
