Another Rash of Mail Thefts Over the Weekend in Bloomfield Township

The department issued the third public alert this year following another series of thefts over the weekend.

Officials with the Bloomfield Township Police Department issued another warning to residents today about using street-side mailboxes outside their homes following another series of mail theft reports over the weekend.

It is the fourth similar public alert this year, and second in just four weeks.

"The suspects are stealing any mail out of residential mailboxes in the hope of intercepting outgoing checks. It is imperative that if you MUST mail checks out for bills, etc., that these be deposited in public mailboxes or at the post office.," an alert posted on the department's Facebook page stated.

The alert did not include specifics of the weekend incidents, and investigators were not immediately available for comment Monday morning.

The warnings issued in January, March and May all stated the perpetrators target  outgoing checks since they offer easy access to a victim's bank accounts and can be used to make fraudulent checks payable to other people.

Anyone with information is asked to call the department at 248-433-7752.
