Bloomfield Township Police Issue New Scam Alerts

Bloomfield Township residents reported scam attempts via Craigslist and telephone last week.

Bloomfield Township Police Department warned residents about two scams after separate reports last week.

In one incident, a resident in 5100 block of Vincennes told police on June 24 that  she answered a job posting on Criagslist and was hired. The victim said she received checks that she deposited into her account with instructions to obtain money orders and send them to separate addresses for bills for her new employer.

After a short time,  the victim discovered the checks she deposited were fraudulent, and amounted to more than $5,400, reports said. Investigators are attempting to identify the suspects in the scam.

In a separate report, a township resident said she received a phone call on Tuesday from someone who said her computer was infected with a virus, and that it was infecting other computers as well. The caller said he could remove the virus remotely if she went to a particular website and allowed the caller access into her computer. The resident told police she knew it was a scam and hung up, according to the warning posted on the department's Facebook page.

Anyone that receives similar calls or has information about these incidents is encouraged to call the department at 248-433-7752.
