Mailbox Blown Up, Identity Theft Reported in Bloomfield Township

The Bloomfield Township Police Department provided the following information. Arrests, where they are mentioned, do not indicate conviction.

A resident in the 700 Block of Palms Road told officers with the Bloomfield Township Police Department that he awoke to a loud bang outside his home between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. on Aug. 3, and went back to bed thinking it was thunder.

The following day he went to get his mail and discovered someone placed an explosive device in the mailbox and destroyed it, reports said. No damage or suspect information was available, but investigators are following leads.

Fraudulent cell phones

A resident in the 100 Block of Douglas Drive, called police on Aug. 1 upon receiving a cell phone via FedEx purchased in his name without his permission, reports said. He told police it was not the first one, and that a total of $900 worth of phones were recently purchased fraudulently with his personal information.

The man was unable to say how his personal information was compromised, but police are investigating and trying to determine the source of the purchases.

Anyone with information about these incidents is encouraged to call the department at 248-433-7752.
