5 Things About The Bloomfield Township Public Library's 50th Anniversary

Help the Bloomfield Township Public Library celebrate 50 years of essential service to the Bloomfield community with a series of special events that kick-off this month.

This year marks a special anniversary at The Bloomfield Township Public Library and there's a lot that patrons should know about the planned celebration getting under way this weekend.

Why Go?

Show your support for the library and have a little fun starting at 1 p.m. with 1960s-themed face-painting, photo booth, crafts, karaoke singing and dance lessons. All ages are welcome, and there is no fee or registration required.

Get Nostalgic

Library patrons will get a heavy dose of what life, and the Bloomfield community, was like when the library first opened in 1964 during the 'Feeling Groovy' celebration. Toppermost, a local Beatles-tribute band, will cap Saturday's kick-off with a live performance at 7:30 p.m.

“This kickoff launches a year’s worth of events to celebrate the Library’s history and to thank the community for their strong support through these 50 years,” said Library Trustee Judy Lindstrom, chairwoman of the 50th Anniversary Committee. “We hope to put a smile on everyone’s face as we take a nostalgic look back to the 1960s.”

How to get Involved

In addition to attending the special events, library patrons can contribute to the anniversary celebration by using their own words. Months ago, library staff started collecting people's stories on what they love about visiting the library and the services and programs it provides. Stories are still welcome by e-mail, at the Welcome Desk, or directly on the dedicated 50th Anniversary page on the library's website.

Did You Know?

The library's community room is named for long-time township residents Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Harcourt Green, who donated land to the Library Board for library construction in January 1964.

The first Library Board formed in 1963, and comprised of: John D. Rumsey, President; Mary Katherine King, Secretary; Betty F. Abbott, Treasurer; Ralph G. Hesler, Lucile Roehm, and Phillip Caldwell, who was later replaced by Ann Sheldon.

Save the Date

Keep Saturday, Oct. 18 open for “A Night at the Library.” The gala evening event will conclude the anniversary celebration with entertainment, food, and more family fun. Details to be released soon, officials said.
