Brother Rice, Country Day Resume Playoff Runs Today
Two Saturday tilts will determine whether the Warriors and Yellowjackets advance in the MHSAA quarterfinals.
It's Saturday, a day normally reserved for college football. But two Bloomfield-area high school teams will be back on the gridiron today to continue their quest for state titles in the MHSAA playoffs.
First, the Brother Rice Warriors (11-0) will take on Detroit Catholic League rival U of D Jesuit (7-4) at 1 p.m. on Hurley Field in Berkley. The two teams met just three weeks ago, with the Warriors getting the better of the Cubs 38-0. But U-D is playing better football and coming off an upset over Oak Park.
The Warriors continued to impress last week with a another high-scoring performance in a dominating win over Birmingham Seaholm. They are looking to extend the season and legendary coaching career of Al Fracassa, who will retire whether the school wins its third-straight championship or not.
Detroit Country Day (8-3) takes on Marine City (10-1) at 7 p.m. at East China Stadium, in St. Clair
The Yellowjacket offense is playing at a high level, amassing 98 points in two playoff games behind quarterback Tyler Wiegers. The highly-efficient signal caller completed 15-of-18 passes for 239 yards and had a hand in five touchdowns in last week's 49-27 win over Notre Dame Prep.
